Placing All Our Bets for Indigofera in 2013
November 23, 2012
Commercializing the
feeding of Indigofera for small ruminants in Tropical Philippines is
slowly coming into reality. The private sector have been very aggressive
in accepting that Indigofera can indeed improve nutritional intake of
goats at a lower cost as shown by Alaminos Goat Farm very successful
dairy operation.
The Bureau of Animal Industry is realizing the big impact of
introducing the tree legume Indigofera for small ruminant feeding. BAI
have provided a budget for 200 kilos of Indigofera seeds, 100 kilos of
Rensonii seeds and 500 kilos of centrosema as a start.
AGF continues to focus in planting more Indigofera in Alaminos. We
test our seeds for germination rate for every batch of seeds we sell by
planting seeds from the current batch being sold. The seeds used for
this area were the October 2012 Indigofera seeds which we started
selling during the AgriLink Show in October. Germination rate was quite
high because of the balance rains experienced the past two weeks.
As an advice, plant in well prepared soil with focus on planting
during the rainy days. Cover the seeds at most with 1 and half inches of
soil, sometimes if we plant it to deep the seeds will have a hard time
to germinate and ends up dead. Cleaning when the seed starts to sprout
would be a good idea to give them all the space to grow without the
weeds competing for the nutrients from the soil.
Composted goat manure would be very good for your Indigofera, It will
take a little more time before the nutrients becomes available but
definitely it will enhance the soil with organic nutrients. It also
improves the holding capacity of the soil for moisture through time.
2013 will be pivotal for the Public Private Partnership between BAI
and AGF in research and commercialization of technology in feeding
Indigofera to small ruminants . The New Year will determine how far AGF advocacy that Indigofera will go long way in improving the nutritional intake of goats at a lower cost in tropical Philippines
