Response:

Its nice to cross the  Boer buck to a saanen doe or anglo doe. It will give you good looking and fast growing kids. I would prefer the female to be a saanen or anglo nubian bred by a Boer buck. The female saanen or anglonubian have very good mothering ability and produce more milk than a boer doe.

Question / Comment:
Dear Sir, Do you ship to Dumaguete City Negros Oriental? How much is your pair of Full blood Boer goat. Thanks, Rey
Response:
The unresolved issues with FMD prevents Luzon breeders to ship goats to the Visayas and Mindanao at the moment. A pair of purebred Boer will cost you pick up at our farm in Alaminos, Php 39,000 pesos.

Question / Comment:
good day AGF. i would like to ask if there are anymore updates on the Goat meat standards? id like to know the standards in quality when i comes to the fabrication of goat meat, the standard prices for each cuts and lastly, the values added onto processing sausage. hope to hear from you guys soon. thanks and Godbless.
Response:
Our friends from PCARRD have promised us to present the result of the studies  this year but because of their busy schedule they haven't found time to do so. The guys at APDC are ready to present the results of  the study  in a forum. We will annouce it at our website when PCARRD is ready to host the forum to present the results.  After slaughtering skin off, the carcass was eveluated and  deboned, 70 % of the carcass is meat and 30% is bone and fat.

To the Management: I just want to ask if you have training program because our relatives in New Zealand want us to inquire if you have.. Im hoping and waiting for your reply as soon as possible.. Thank you very much in advance.. sincerely yours, Angelita Cabrera
Response:
Training program no, short farm visit yes. Our website will provide you a clear picture of what we did in raising goats for the past five years. You will learn a lot from our practical experiences in raising goats which we continue to share in our website. This is part of our advocacy to promote goat raising in country as a sustainable and profitable business if done properly.

Question / Comment:
Hello. Just want to ask if goats that are in a cut and carry style do encounter leg problems because of lack of exercise. They are just confined in a small confinement all their life. Also , is it still advisable to buy a 2.5 year old buck to be your herd sire. What is the right age? Thanks . As always, you are very helpful.
Response:
I don't think so, problems will be more on nutrition rather than lack of exercise. It would be a good idea to buy a younger buck maybe 10 months or  a year old.  Younger  bucks would have easier time to  adapt to the new environment compared to older bucks based on our experience.

Transferring goats to a new environment is a form of stress and raisers should address these.

Question / Comment:
have you tried reading your website? are you aware that it is very difficult to read when the letters are always jumping on the screen? just wanted to bring it to your attention. thank you very much.
Response:
Yes , sorry for that, the problem is in the size of the pictures in the slideshow, when the picture changes in the slide show with a different size the letters keeps on jumpimg. I guess you have to bear with that because the pictures in the slide show is important to relay the message  we are sharing. They say when people see they remember.

For the moment we are sticking with the slide show but in the future we will try to correct the problem by using pictures of the same size.

Question / Comment:
HI.I would like to ask what is the right age for a doe to get pregnant and for a buck to start performing stud service? Also, is it true that if you use your doe and buck early (less than 1 year old) , it can lead to stunted growth (bansot) . Thanks for answering my question.MORE POWER.
Response:
We breed our doe base on size 25 to 30 kilos or about a year, we start teaching our buck to breed at 10 months on a limted basis. If you start to breed your goats early, yes it can lead to stunted growth but if you try to look at the problem its more on nutrition, the goats are not getting enough protein and energy.

Hi. Salamat.
Response:
Milk Star is available at Robinson Galleria in Ortigas and Robinson Metro East. Goat's milk is very good for puppies.

Question / Comment:
Hi. My question is which is better? Pure Saanen or pure Anglo Nubian buck to be bred to local goats? Thanks. More power.
Response:
In upgrading the native doe both will do but we have a bias towards a Saanen buck for upgrading. Based on our experience the Saanen would address most of the problem of a native goats in length, height and the udder size. In most cases the color of the kids born would be white.

Question / Comment:
Hi Art/Rene, I have been constantly attending Agrilink and WOFEX. I noticed that you are now making and selling goats milk ice cream. May i now if you are using the same pasteurized ice cream that you is sold in SM supermarkets as MILK STAR, in making your ice cream. If this is so, will there be a shorter shelf life for the ice cream considering that the shelf life of milk star is around 7 days? The reason im asking is i plan to make homemade ice cream using MILK STAR or other goats milk available.
Response:
With the addition of sugar and being inside the freezer you will have a extended shelf life for you goat's milk ice cream. The pasteurized goat's milk can last 6 months when frozen.

Question / Comment:
First of all, congrat's and God Bless... I just want to ask if you cater to provincial deliveries? Like here in La Union or in Baguio? If you do,how many liters or gallons of milk is the minimum order? How long will it take for your product to reach our area if possible? What is the usual duration of milk before it expires? Will these be safe if i use it as a substitute of a breast milk in my NEWBORN PUPPIES??? And, lastly, Will these also be safe as a substitute of a breast milk for an infant... Thanks a lot...More Power to your company..
Response:
You can try Jeff Lim in Tarlac. His number is 0918 9080488. When you go to Manila MILK STAR are available at SM, Robinson, Landmark UniMart Cash and Carry Supermarkets. Put in a cooler with ice going back to LaUnion. Place it in a freezer and it would last 6 months. Dog breeders who joins dog shows includes goat milk in the diet. They say its very good with puppies.

Question / Comment:
Hi. Nice to know that you have an e-mail to cater or entertain questions about goat farming. I want to start goat farming when I retire a few months or a year from now. I'm interested in goat farming so to say but I need to prepare the land prior to buying your goats. Do you sell the napier grass or indigofera seeds or seedlings so that the goat will have food (propagated in my farm) when they arrive to the farm (after buying from you)? Please let me know how much and how to get from you since our farm is in the visayas region? Thanks for the time and hope to hear from you soon. kind regards, Simon
Response:
Yes it would be a good idea to start planting forage forage grass and legumes way ahead of the goats. This will insure that your forage area will   have time to get   established.  Seeds would be available at Ubay Station of Department of Agriculture  in  Bohol and Mindanao Baptist (MBLRC) in Mindanao. At   the moment getting shipping permit to ship goats  from Luzon to  the Visayas is a problem because of FMD issues.

Question / Comment:
Sir,hav a good day i just want to know the price of 1pair of boer (lalaki & babae)about 7 to 10 months old? thanks
Response:
A pair of Boers would cost you Php 39,000 pesos.

Name: Peter Bell
Question / Comment:
Hi Art, What is the approxmate weight range of your gots for slaughter please? Regards Peter Bell
Response:
For retail buyers they buy 15 to 25 kilos, by reason of their budget. Through the course of time we have  shown our wholesalers that a 40 to 50 kilos weight range would bring in more profits for them because of  higher dressweight percentage. The meat to bone ratio is also favorable at this weight range,  based on the study we did with Animal Product Development Center of the Bureau of Animal Industry.

It took time to show the wholesalers in our area in Laguna and Batangas that hybrid goats at heavier weights would bring in more profit for them. They now consider and accept these as facts in goat meat slaughter.

Our meat goats are now all sold out as wholesaler  were buying everything in sight since December, 2010. The market demand for quality meat goats have been very good the past months and we decided to raise our price this July to Php 125 pesos per kilo.

Question / Comment:
I am planning to start a goat raising business in Aurora Provice starting with a 2.5 hectare land which was ready for my project. My problem now is how to get a pair of pure bred boer in you farm and deliver it to Aurora. My questions are: 1. How much is the cost now of 1 year old pure bred Boer pair as my starting pair. 1.How to bring the pair to Aurora. Could I just use ordinary transportation pick-up or trucks for these goats. Will there be problem with regards to animal stress when transporting them long distance. 2. Any place you are selling/farm other than in Laguna say in Bulacan or Cabanatuan? 3. Can these goats start with any type of leaves availabe in my farm
Response:
A Commercial Boer Buck will cost you  Php 15,000 pesos and a Purebred Boer doe is at Php 24,000 pesos, for a total of Php 39,000 pesos.Shipping long distance has always been in buying good breeding materials. Our original Boer breeders came from Australia and have travelled thousand of miles to reach the Philippines. They have travelled by land in Australia, then by air to Subic Bay and by land to our farm in Alaminos, Laguna.

The secret on long travel is to keep them comfortable and prevent them from being dehydrated by giving electrolyte or dextrose powder in the water they drink.

Because of the humidity and hot weather in the Philippines it would be a good idea to transport during the night.

I would recommend that you plant more forage grass and legumes before you buy your goats. Nutriton is the secret of our success.

Our website is a rich source of information about raising goats, try to spend time reading and you will learn from our experiences.

Question / Comment:
Sir, I'm very interested in acquiring and venture to goat breeding.I have a small farm in Tarlac. My biggest problem is transporting or delivery to Tarlac, and the second thing would be where to buy seedling, seeds, or cutting to provide them with continuous, and nutrious food all year round and probably a small pamphlet on how to, and remedy for simple diseases and regular vitamins, deworming, and the do's and don't's. Many thanks for your time, and "hope to hear from you soon. Raul
Response:
Our website contains most of the answers to your questions, continue to read it and you will learn from our experience. Try to go to BAI Forage division office in Visayas Ave Quezon, City and inquire  for seeds. Look for Remy Acasio.

Try to plant and establish your forage grass and legumes before even thinking of buying your first goat.

Question / Comment:
Kindly advise regarding Goat Raising, i'm about to start the business..How to start?should i start Purebred Boer Goats?how many Bucks and Doe to start.. as well as price...thank you very much..
Response:
Plant first the forage grass and legumes that the goats will need. Study the market for Boer goats in your area, if there is a market go ahead and breed purebred  Boers.  If you are targetting the meat market what you need are upgraded does but I would recommend that you use a purebred buck to breed them to produce fast growing and meaty goats.

Dear Sir / Madam: Good Morning! I am Noli, currently working here in Kuwait for a job contract. I am interested of raising goats for personal consumption and might be for business purposes in the future. I just want to ask for your kind advice and points to consider in raising goats. Because I am planning to start with ten (10) numbers of goats only (either native or hybrid), how much do you think it will cost? Your immediate response is highly appreciated. Thank You, Noli
Response:
Nutrition will be a key issue to be successful in raising goats. Housing during the wet season is also important. Visit our website and you will a learn a lot of things from the experiences we continue to share.

I would advice you to plant the forage grass and legumes that you will feed your goats before even thinking of buying your first goat.

Question / Comment:
are these breeds suitable in the highlands ( Benguet). I am planning to raise goats of this kind but I am not sure if its suitable in our place.
Response:
Maybe you could ask people from the Department of Agriculture, but I guess they will because one time I was invited by DA AMAS to do a presentation about the business opportunity in goat dairying. In the open forum the problem they were mentioning is the pasture area  available around Baguio City and problem of irrigating during the summer months.

Goats will adapt with the proper animal husbandry practices. The Saanens and Boers we imported from Australia have adapted from temperate to tropical condition.

Question / Comment:
sir art,im from nueva ecija and planning to go into goat raising venture,i used to be a goat buy-and-seller,i did some research and i've come to know about your farm and i was inspired, your website has been very informative,i think i know enough to start pero sbi nyo nga kailangan muna iimprove ang forage kc confined system din po ang balak ko because of limitations sa lupa,i've contacted n din po ung mbrlc at balak ko n nga din umorder s kanila ng seeds, ang blak ko po sana ay indigofera, flemingia at rensonii and also ipil-ipil,ang question ko po ay gaano po kya kdaming buto ang kakailanganin ko,blak ko po kc 50% indigofera,25% rensonii at 25% flemingia, kung 1 hectare po ang tataniman, ilang kilo po kyang seeds ng bwat isa ang kailangan ko po....yun n lng po kc ang hindi ko alam pra maitanim n sana bago magtag-ulan....salamat po and more power to you and god bless...
Response:
I am sorry but I am not to sure kung ganong  kadaming  seeds ang kailangan mo, it would better to be sure, ask the guys at MBLRC their opinion.  Using my guestimates for 1 hectare , I will buy 2 kilos of indigofera. One kilo of indigofera I would use to plant the one hectare and the other one kilo as resrve for future planting. Hope it helps and Good luck. Among the seed you mentioned indigofera is the easiest to establish and gives  the biggest volume of foliage.

Getting the shipping permit from the Bureau of Animal Industry would be a problem. The main issue is the FMD tag for Luzon and the Visayas and Mindanao are FMD free zone.

Maybe its just a matter of pricing, if you are willing to pay the price. The top 5% fullblood boers prices starts at Php 40,000 pesos up.

Question / Comment:
good day agf... ask ko lang what is the desired distance in planting indigofera? para mas maging mayabong siya. planning to visit your farm when i go home by april or may. pasama na lang ako dun sa friend ko na nakabili jan ng saanen buck from bagac, bataan.
Response:
30 to 40 centimeters if you want more  foiliages since you will have more indigofera planted per square meters. If you intend to produce seeds it would require more space say one or two meters apart. The key to produce more leaves is to prune the tree when they reach one meter during their growth stage to 50 centimeters. We like them at their mature stage at 4 to 5 ft for easier cutting of foliages for feeding.

We add composted goat manure to fertilize our indigofera and it works. Indigofera is
the easiest to plant among the legumes we planted so far with malunggay as the hardest during the wet season.

Response:
Sometimes change of environment and different kind of goats places the boer buck confused in his new environment. It would be a good idea to separate the buck from the herd. Sometimes injecting Vit ADE helps. It would be a good idea to break him slowly by bringing a doe in heat to his pen. Call me.

If the goats will eat it why not.

Question / Comment:
hi! Sir Art... any news about bringing your goats here in mindanao? do you think the Alpine goat bred and La Mancha bred will survive here in Philippines? by the way, where we can buy a ANAA (alpha napthalyne acetic acid)? and please can you give us the name of the basic mixing of your feeds? i mean, what kind of concentrated do you mix..? if you do'nt mind please!!! it will help us a lot... if you will not gona tell the ratio, does'nt matter!!! as long as we can know what to feed our goat a right kind of concentrated mixed... Thank You And More Power.....
Response:
You can buy Anaa from your agricultural supply store selling fertilizer. We are looking at this year, we saw an administrative order no 12 dated 2009 stating that ruminants are not covered by the ban but will require some procedure to get shipping permit from BAI. We are trying to find out about the requirements in shipping breeders to the Visayas and Mindanao. Once we get a clear step by step procedure we will post it in our website.

La Manchas,Alphine will survive provided proper animal husbandry practice. We put our dairy goats in full confinement and focus on nutrition. That our secret in achieving a 305 days lactation period of over 2  kilos per day.

Question / Comment:
Hi Art. I've been reading a lot of articles about goat raising and your website is giving me a lot of helpful information. I'm in the process of looking for a piece of land here in Batangas and plant forage grass and legumes and eventually to raise/breed goats. My first venture would be on meat production. My plan is to get at least a dozen of natives does and buy an imported buck. I've learned that Boer is best for meat, Anglo Nubian for boat meat and milk and Saanen for milk production. I want to multiply my herd the fastest way possible and based on your latest article, it's the Saanen buck that I need for my native does for them to produce milk sustainable for kidding. My question is how much is a good Saanen Buck? How old is an ideal buck as breeder? Or is it better for me to go for a Boer buck instead? I have no experience raising livestock but I got interested and inspired by my officemate which is also a customer of yours. I'm seeing a lot of potential in goat raisin
Response:
A purebred Saanen buck will cost you  Php 25,000 pesos, F3 Saanen buck is Php 15,000 pesos. A commercial Boer buck will cost Php 15,000 pesos. Its your call.

Response:

Iba yung gumamela, ang mulberry leaves ay ginagamit para pagkain ng silkworm in the production of silk for the seri culture industry. Its about 18% protein and it is 80% digestable. It is very palatable with its soft texture, goats love them. Experts tells me that feeding mulberry could be  good  for dairy goats.

Good day po, Could you please recommend what is the best breed of goat to be raise for a beginner?
Response:
I would recommend that you plant  forage grass and legumes first, wait for it to be established before you buy your first goat. Visit as many goat farm as you can to learn from them. At the same time scout for possible source of the breeder goats you will buy. For a beginner I would recommend a Saanen or Anglo Nubian buck. For the females look for upgraded ones so you will have good start. Keep reading articles in our website , it tells a complete story of what we did. Good Luck

Hi sirt art, good day! Im planning to start a goat farm in our place in batangas. I have a land pero part of which is ginagamit ng uncle ko for piggery but there is still enough space para s aking goat farm. Ang tanong ko po sana, is there any disadvantage or risk kung medyo malapit s piggery ang goat farm ko. Could you see any risk especially sa pagkalat ng disease kung malapit ito sa piggery. How far would you suggest dapat na distance ang gawin ko? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks! -Rick
Response:
I have seen goats in some piggeries with big vacant space and the goats seems to be doing well. The goats were even going under the elevated flooring of the starter house waiting for feeds falling from the feeder. I guess if your land is big with space to plant forage grass and legumes, they will be alright. Disease will always be a problem pigs or no pigs, thats part of raising livestock. The farther the better.

Hi Art, Eversince I really wanted to have a goat farm on my own. I live here in Orion, Bataan. We have 1 hectare land here and planning to raise goats. At first, I am planning to raise native goats and eventually shift to higher breed like the ones that you're raising. I already collected stylo seeds from BAI and next month we will plant them. Is it advisable to start with native goats or the higher breed? Also I hope I can visit your farm one of these days. Thanks and more power!!! :)

Question / Comment:
good day, sir art, I've just got some seeds of centrocema, indigofera, stylo, rensoni, sysbania and some tricantera plants. Now i'm just planning to grow them in seed baskets then re-plant this coming rainy season. may I ask which should I plant more for a cut and carry style of forage crop and which is good for a free range area around 300 sq. meters
Response:
Yes that would be a good start, for us the easiest to plant is indigofera that is why its our main legume for our cut and carry style feeding.

For the free range they are  allright provided that they are mature first before you release the goat and dont over graze them  or else the legumes will die. Do rotational grazing.

my goat is getting skinny everyday, i already dewormed her what should i do?

Try to study the nutritional requirement of goats. In most cases proper legumes and forage grass would do the trick and  if it dont its time to cull your goat and look for a replacement.

Question / Comment:
Hi,good day! Thank you for your website, this is very informartive lalo na sa mga magsisimula pa sa goat raising business. Im mark 24y/o from batangas, im planning to start an improvement program sa mga alaga naming kambing. And im interested of buying goat from you pag uwi ko. Ask ko sana, yun po bang F3 saanen buck na binebenta nyo is nasa ilang kilo yun and how old. Pra iimprove po ung herd ng aming native doe,anu po ang mas maiaadvise nyo, use an F3 saanen doe first then soon we could use a purebred boer back. Or use ung CBB nyo first with our native does, then use purebred saanen buck on 2nd generation. Please give me some advice po on how to start our improvement program. Meat production ang primary interest ko,pe
Response:
I would recommend a purebred Saanen buck or an F3 Saanen buck to upgrade the native doe. Our experience in using a saanen buck with our upgrade indicate that it will increase the size, height, length and the the most important is increase udder size. All kids would probably be white in color. The females when selected well would be ideal replacement breeder to cross with the CBB buck. In all these you take advantage of hybrid vigor resulting to bigger, fast growing and stronger goats

Hope it helps.

Name: Roger Navallo
Question / Comment:
Sir, I have 4 hectares of unirrigated farm lot which i considered useful for goat farming as source of meat. From reading your responses to questions, i have planned the following: Farm preparation: 1) 3 hectares to be planted this coming rainy season with lots of forage grass and legumes ahead of the goats. 2) Out of these 3 hectares, two hectares will be alloted for 60 herds and divide the farm into 2 for rotational grazing. Do i need to introduce the herds 9 to 12 months after planting? 3) The remaining one hectare, divided into two for rotational grazing, will be allocated for 1 Boer Buck and 25 Boer Does. Can you provide these requirements and for how much at today's selling price? Can this combination enough to replace 60 herds per season. Can i introduce them 6 months after planting? 4) One hectare shall be allocated for containment, warehouse and living quarters and other infra structures. Thank you for your reply. Kind regards, Roger
Response:
I suggest that you wait for a year before you introduce the goats to your grazing area. In making this statement I want to be sure that what you planted are already established. In setting up your grazing area make sure you make it like a salad garden, a combination of legumes and forage grass, the more the better. I would also  recommend that you set aside a portion for your forage grass and legumes for cut and carry style during the rainy season.

Always remember goats won't tolerate the rains, they are susceptible to pneumonia. The number one killer of goats in the range is cocidia, this is something you have to watch out during the change of the weather form dry to wet.

Know your market well in your area before you decide what type of goats you will raise. and buy. Find out what the market wants in your area. Marketing is  a key issue that a lot of raisers have not seriously considered whent they go into goat raising. A lot of the raisers thinks that the key is to produce and the market will always  be there. You need to find out how much the market is willing to pay for the goats you will be producing. At the end of the day you need to sell your goats at a profit when you sell them.

Sorry we don't conduct seminars but you are welcome to visit our farm and see our operation. Our Mitra Line is our top seller and big demand keeps us on our toes to increase production. Stocks for our Mitra line are a problem because of tight supply.

Question / Comment:
Response:

We sell our Mitra Line buck  at 10 months old, the kidding season started last October and they will be available in August 2010. They dont last long because of the big demand for our Mitra Line bucks. Buyers would usually buy them when they are much younger to have the first choice when they see them at the farm.

Question / Comment:
Good day! I am a newby on goat raising from Bulacan. My father and I always wanted to buy a boer (male) but never got a chance to get affordable ones. We are newbies that is why we want to buy a good material and the same time have a good knowledge on how to take care of them. My questions are: Do you have any seminar that you usually offer or take for goat raising especially boer goats? Or do you have a feeding guide? medication tables? during their critical weeks? How is the business on goat meat? How do you produce commercial for meat purpose? Should we buy a boer on your farm? Is it safe to travel them form Laguna to Bulacan? How about quarantine on the roads, will there be any trouble? Sorry for my asking, but I am interested with your boers. Hoping for your response. Respectfully yours Red Calata
Response:
Our website contains these information about raising goats based on our experience, read and you will learn a lot. Come and visit us at the back of Iglesia ni Cristo church in Alaminos, Laguna and I will show you how we take care of our Boer goats. Regarding shipping from Laguna to Bulacan I see no big problem provided they are handled properly.

Upon arrival in your farm rest your goats for three hours and add electorlyte or dextorse powder in the drinking water. You can buy these from feed store or from Mercury drugstore. Provide the goat good forage and legumes.

Hope it helps.

Good day sir Art tanong ko lang gaano katagal magpadami o magpalaki ng napier grass , plamigia at setrosena para sa 1hectar land meron na kasi ako na konting kambing pero native lang balak ko kasi cut &carry tnx and more power

Now is the time to plant your forage grass and legumes with the abundant rains. After one year it will be well established.

Question / Comment:
Hello, I seen your website on the internet and I am looking for a little advice and expertise from Goat Farmers. I am interested in starting my own Goat Farm Business for their meat. I am wanting to start with a small herd on a 1 acre piece of land I have. My question I have for you is, what would you consider to be to many goats for 1 acre? And what is the best thing that you have found to feed goats, if you are raising them for their meat? Sincerely, Clint Adams Ocala, Fl
Response:
I am more familiar with 1 hectare (10,000 square meters) with improve pasture combination of legumes and forage grass I'd say 50 heads.Centrosema, indigofera with napier grass and mulberry plus hematigola.

Question / Comment:
May I know if the operation of your farm was not affected by the onslought of typhon Ondoy, Peping, Ramil and Santi. What I know is that goats especially the pure breed ones are quite sensitive to climate change. How were you able to safeguard your herd from flooding, strong winds and heavy rains. Is goat farming still viable with this condition?
Response:
During the wet season our purebred goats are in full confinement, in elevated slotted floors. We have tarpulin curtains to prevent the winds and rain from getting inside the pens. The system is expensive but we dont have problems during the wet season.

Question / Comment:
Greetings, I am considering an investment in land, and, for various reasons, am considering a goat farm. I was wondering if you would consider buying milk wholesale from another producer, especially if he were milking Saanans. If so, what would you consider to be a reasonable price per liter in today's market (non-binding and only a ballpark estimate, of course). You guys have done such a great job with your product line, from pasture to shelf. I'm overwhelmed, and can't imagine duplicating your efforts. Any room in your supply chain for someone only interested in producing the milk? Thanks and regards, Bill Jaeger

Question / Comment:
Hi Art, Firstly, i would like to congratulate you on your success and continued development in your goat business. I really admire how you are dishing out so much effort in giving our kababayans info on establishing their own goat farm. I am looking at building our own medium size goat farm in Zamboanga Sibugay, targeting meat production as the place has muslim dominated population. As i am based in abroad and living in bulacan my in laws in Sibugay are going to look over the business. I would like to purchase a pair of Boers and an Anglo Nubian Buck, we had already started herding some natives that we would like to cross by these breeds. Do you have an idea how i can bring them to Sibugay? or can you suggest what are the best possible ways to bring them there. Please email me you price and looking forward to your reply. Thanks and Regards - Robert

Question / Comment:
Good day! Way back then i've asked you why did go for goat dairying instead of meat but I was surprised and a bit interested when I opened your site this time. Value added products were finally introduced and developed by your well managed company. Well that's quite an edge because you guys are really aggressive. It's an inspiration for all of us to follow your entrepreneurial prowess. Is it okay if by any chance we would incorporate Goat raising in a hog or layer farm ? Thanks and God bless! Good job in the Last Agri-Link.
Response:

Focus is an important facet of successful entrepreneurs and if it will not distract you from what you are doing why not. The only worries that I see is, will it not aggravate problems with flies? The value added products were developed by APDC an attach agency of the Bureau of Animal Industry as part of our Goat Meat Standard Initiatives with them.

I am an OFW, engaged as Technical Advisor of an international development program here in central Asia. I have a 5 hectare mango farm back home in Negros Oriental, and plan to put up a goat farm [my college degree is on Animal Science] .In your experience, what's the best way of shipping breeder stocks to Negros [Dumaguete] and normally how much does it cost?

The ideal way is to ship by cargo through Cebu Pacific. At the moment there is a restriction in the issuance of shipping permit of goats from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao. Once Bureau of Animal Industry resolves this  we will post it in our website.

Question / Comment:
Please provide info about the 305-day lactation curve of your Mitra line. Thank you.
Response:

Sorry but due to the big demand for our Mitra Line we have not included them in milk test being conducted in the farm. We leave the kids with the doe and do not milk them anymore so we can produce more kids to meet market requirement. In initial test we did with the anglos they have a shorter lactation period compared with the Saanen.

Sir, i have been going through your website and it's just amazing. Sir ang tanong ko lang po ay ano ang recommended area of land to start a goat farm and does it matter kung hilly or flat land siya. Maraming salamat po for sharing your ideas.

It does not matter if it is hilly or flat what is important is that you improve your pasture area by planting legumes. Legumes are more digestable and have high protein content.

Gud day! i am from cagayan de oro city and plans to farm and raise goat hoping to bring a few of ur success here. i understand u have crossbreeds with island born boer-saanen. my question is that "is it possible to reproduce them purposely for meat and milk without crossing them with natives" since they have already adpted to our climate, instead of going to the procedures of crossbreeding them with natives for adaptibility to the are. arden
Response:
When we cross a Boer with a Saanen and pick the female as a replacement breeder if we want to go meat,we want to improve the milking and mothering abilty of the next generation to successfuly wean healthy kids at weaning. If we want to go into dairy, producing milk we would go to Saanen and if we want to take advantage of hybrid vigor we will cross it with an anglonubian.

You need to know what you want meat or milk and go from there boers for meat, saanen for milk.

Question / Comment:
good day, I'm a new comer in goat raising, currently having 8 native does (expected to have kids before this year ends) and now looking for a good buck, aiming for a meat producing herd in the future. I've read in some articles to cross an anglo nubian buck to a native doe first before going to boer buck. My concern now is the anglo nubian's bloodline, I've learned that there are F2, F3 and pure bread blood lines, which can be a good starter buck for me.
Response:
We advocate the use of a purebred buck in any upgrading program, the idea is to breed with direction. The buck will represent 50% of what the genetic make up of the next generation replacement doe. The bucks to be produce will always for slaughter. Hope it helps.

Hi Art, Just would like to know if you have another buckling like Mitra Line 001. Best Regards, Edwin
Response:
Every year we just get one or two exceptional goats like Mitra Line 001, in 2008  his full brother AGF 1011 was a big hit at the Agri Link Show when we first introduced our Mitra Line to the Public. Mitra Line 001 is even better looking than AGF 1011, we just need to confirm if he is a fast grower like his siblings.

I will inform you when something comes up again . I am sure its coming soon with the bulk of our Mitra Line does kidding starting mid October.

Hi Art! Thank you for all the information in your site. You have been very helpful. I've been breeding Boer goats since September 2008. Right now I am researching about goat weaning. When do you usually separate the kids from the Boer does? Is it 3 months or 4? The reason for the question is I want to know when the kids will get sexually mature. Currently I separate the kids when they’re around 3.5 months old. Thanks Art.

All the sharing that we do are based on our actual farm experiences in our long years of raising ruminants. We don't touch questions regarding financial matters although we keep on emphasizing that goat raising is a long gestating project, for the first two years do not expect to make money. You make your money on your third year if you do everything right. My father Rene and I share the task in answering your questions in this website. We also share the job in updating the content of our website.

Response:
I would recommed that you plant forage grass and legumes in your one hectare land. In our case cut and carry style with concentrate feeding and in full confinement one hectare can support 50 to 60 heads. For free range on pasture I say 20 heads would be okay, that is you will plant more legumes and forage grass and divide the land into compartments to do rotational grazing.
Visit  goat farms to see and learn from the owners. If you do good with nutrition you will be alright.

Question / Comment:
Dear Sir/Madam, May isa pa akong tanong, maaari bang i breeding itong Boer Goat or Dairy Goat sa native goat dito sa Pinas? Thank you very much, Mr. Nimrod C. Arque
Response:
If you plan to upgrade the native goat I would recommend a saanen or anglo nubian buck. After selecting the good replacement breeders from this generation, I would recommend a good boer buck. In recommending a dairy buck for the first generation the intention is to increase the lenght, height and milk ability of the next generation. In using the boer buck your aim is to make your next generation meaty which is what the meat market wants.

Investing in a good purebred buck is worth it since it can service at least 20 does and 50% of the genetic make up of your next generation will come from.
Yes it is expensive so choose your buck well.

hi! im so thankfull for knowing your websites! im 30 yers old, a resident of California but planing to put up a business ( goat farming ) there in Philippines, in general santos city (mindanao). I learned a lot in your websites. It is very helpfull for us, It is inspired me to have this kind of business aside from i really really love animals and i do have a small farm right now there in gensan. We just started this year with 12 female ( cross breed of native, anglo and boer ) 6 of them are 4 months and 5 months pregnant and 1 male pure blooded Boer in 1 hectare area for the starting and planing to expand every year when we learned the right, proper and complete knowledge of handling this kind of business. including to buy your goat breed there and bring to gensan, then to learn how to produce quality dairy products also for the future business there in gensan! Now, i have a questions for you to ask guys..! Una, anong tamang stage ng kambing dapat pakainin ng Indigofera, Mulberr
Response:

Just give the indigofera and mulberry foliage to the doe and slowly the kids will learn from their mother. In feeding goats in confinement , we introduce any new feed, forage grass and legumes to our goats gradually. In doing so we avoid problem of bloat.

I have just recently started Milking a few of my goats. The question I have is How long does it stay good for in the refer. before it goes bad? I store it in the refer. in Quart mason jars with the lids on it of course. But I am getting more than we can use. If I decide to freeze it what kind of container do you reccomend freezing it in. And how long does it last in the freezer?
Response:

We pasteurize our goats milk and if you store at 4 degress centigrade it stays good up to 7 days, after that the cream starts to separate and solidifies at the top and it will still be good up to 14th day. In  clean plastic bottles with a good cap 3/4 filled it can last months inside the freezer. When you thaw the milk from the freezer make sure you consume it as soon as possible because as air enters the bottle deterioration starts in motion.

Question / Comment:
Hi Art, You are right on the money about mulberry. We have acquired cuttings of hybrid mulberry from Pakistan. We intend to make this forage the main source of our feed in the future. Our goal is to produce about 10,000 cuttings in 2 years. The advantage of this hybrid mulberry is its thick and big leaves compared to the native variety. It is also very, very palatable. Studies have proven that mulberry can definitely be a substitute to the high cost of concentrates which is a major drag on profits. Moreover, mulberry has also been proven to increase milk production. Very promising indeed... How is your sericea lespedeza? Any prospect in the Philippines for artificial insemination as an alternative and a way to preserve the best genetics.... Until next time. Edwin
Response:
Thanks Edwin for the information about Mulberry, hope you do good in your undertaking and share your experiences about what you are doing to fellow goatraisers.

Artificial Insemination and a sperm bank to preserve genetics of outstanding lines that performs well in the tropics would be a good project. When you import semen, I would be interested with semen from ourstanding Anglo Nubian lines. I have a friend who is planning to bring an expert in Embryo Transfer from the United States to do it here and share his experience with our local practioner.

Part of our advocacy that always gets us into serious discussion is that the island born goats would always outperform the imported goats for the simple reason of adaptability to the tropical condition in the Philippines. If you add adaptability in your selection index for your replacement breeders you develop a line that perform well in the tropics.

I am waiting for your feedback on sericea lespedeza on how it goes and thank you for the seeds you gave me.

Question / Comment:
How do you compost goat manures. Could you share to us the right procedure. Any updates on carbonized rice hull and EM (brand?) as beddings to your goats. Could you discuss more on forage developments (nutrition) and housing design tips , share DOs and DONTs in your website. These two key items are priority things for us (newbies) to accomplish on the first phase on goat raising. Alaminos goatfarm is always our inspiration and model to meet our dream goatfarm.
Response:
We add carbonized rice hull under the elevated flooring to absorb the urine and to keep the floor dry to avoid flies. We spray it with beneficial microrganism weekly. We take out the manure to the pasture area every 30 days and cover them with plastic sheet to protect it from the rain. When it is composted already we spread it around the pasture area. The composted manure with carbonized rice hull has been doing wonders to our forage grass and tree legumes although it will take the soil a longer time to absorb it compared to inorganic fertiliser.

Just continue visitng our website and as we acquire verified information we will post it.

Question / Comment:
Is it recommended to upgrade a native goat with a pure breed one? kasi baka sa laki ng anak mahirapan sa panganganak or maaring di makaanak. what is your recommendation about this?
Response:
Our advocacy is to breed an improved native doe with a Saanen buck and our experience indicate in most cases you won't have problem during kidding. The Saanen has a smaller head compared to the other exotic breed and its body is long not wide, these result to trouble free kidding. In adding Saanen blood in your upgrading program you address the problem of length, height and the milking ability of the native herd.

Once you have improved your herd and you want to produce meat goats introduce a boer buck in your breeding program.

Dear Sir, I'm a buy and seller of goats in cavite. I have no permanent job, but, as I've seen goat farming is very potential business.Like, producing milk and for the old goats there is no chances but to butcher. I have many clients here in cavite, but most of them are in a restaurant business. they butchered the goats. I have a very small amount of capital. Can you do something for me to have a stable goat business here in cavite? Thank you and God bless you. Respectfully yours, Mr. Nelson Alvarez
Response:
We can provide the technology based on our experiences on how to produce milk but we are not in the position to provide financial assistance. I guess you have to look for partners and having  a market for meat goats would be your advantage. Good Luck.

Question / Comment:
Hello sir.
Response:
We are doing good using carbonized rice hull  as beddings and the cost of constructing the pen is much much cheaper compared with elevated  plastic flooring. We still use elevated flooring and we get good result using them but the cost of building them is very expensive.

Our vision is to promote a sustainable and proifitable goat industry through commercialization of proven technology.

Question / Comment:
How much milk on the average can I get from a saanen dairy goat per milking?
Response:

Under the tropical condition of the Philippines and proper nutrition between 1.1 kilos to 1.25 kilos per milking or 2.2 kilos to 2.5 kilos per day.

Question / Comment:
I'm just wondering why did you not focus on the goat meat business but instead in the dairy products? correct me if my notion is wrong. I really admire and envy your bus. structure and system. Personally, I also plan to enter the same nature of your business for the reason that our current enterprise is a layer farm which is in line in agriculture just like the goat business but my only concern is the feasibility in our place (Bicol Region).
Response:
When we were starting our friends in the academe calls our system high end. We place our goats in full confinement, feed them forage grass, legumes cut and carry style and concentrate feeds to meet the nutritional requirement. Indeed the cost of maintaining goats under this system is high. To be viable we need to sell more breeders than slaughter meat  goats. With the experience gained raising fullblood Boers from Australia, we decided to take care of Saanen dairy goats to produce fresh goat's milk, breeders and meat.

Selling fresh goat's milk daily compleletly improved our cash flow and when we are ready to sell our female dairy goats next year to the market ,we unleash the full potential of our dairy goat operation. At the moment we are retaining our female dairy goats for our own use in our dairy operation.

Our  production of Saanen, Mitra Line and AMS milking dairy goats in the next two years could not meet the huge orders we are receiving. I hope that answer your question why dairy and not meat goats.

Naga City would be a good place to sell fresh goat's milk. We are not ready to enter into contract growing at the moment.

Question / Comment:
Response:
I can not give you an exact minimum capital, but what I can tell you is goat raising is a long gestating project. Breaking even the first two years would  indicate a very good performance, you make your money on the third year if you did everything right. Continue surfing in the internet and it would be a good idea to visit successful goat farms in the Philippines.

Visiting goat farms will guide you as regards to minimum capital required but I will tell you by experience in the first two years be ready with your capital to sustain your project.

Response:

For upgrading  the native goats we are recommending a Saanen buck. From the offfspring pick the best females as your next generation breeders. The males produced would be for slaughter. You can use a boer buck to breed your F1 Saanen doe to produce meat goats. I think you will need more investment.

Question / Comment:
Bro, if i have 200k ilang kambing na yan kung ibabudget natin ng mabuti at ano ang advise mo kung saan ako magsstart sa milk o meat or milkmeat production. thank you.
Response:
I would budget my money to buy a pair of good purebred buck, a boer to produce meat goats and a Saanen to produce replacement does with good milking abilities. Having does that are  good milkers is always an advantage in raising trouble free kids.

The balance of your budget its your call to decide what does to buy.

Question / Comment:
Is it okay if i have only purebred Boer or Saanen to breed in my native does? How old must be the native doe to prepare for breeding?
Response:
In our long experience in raising goats investing in a good purebred buck is one of the best business decision we have made. Using the purebred buck in our upgrading and breed improvement program made us very competitive in the market after only three years of selection. The idea is to keep the best does you produced as replacement breeders and selling to the meat market the upgraded bucks produced.

In using native does selection is important, experience will dictate that if very small  does are used, expect also to produce small progeny. For us if possible start at least with a 20 kilos native does when you breed them, if you can find a graded native even if cost more it would be better, we are looking at 25 kilos to 30 kilos weight at breeding time.

All our goat sales are pick up at our farm at the back of Iglesia ni Cristo Church in Alaminos, Laguna as a matter of policy.

Question / Comment:
My biggest concern is that of security, with heavy investments of the edible kind, my security costs will rise dramatically, farming native goats isnt a problem, but I do ponder over the need for higher fencing, CCTV, have you also found this a concern. Steve
Response:
Since all our goats are in close confinement we dont need higher fencing and cctv cameras but we do have 24 hour security to watch over our facilities.
